52 weeks of bodily bliss, week 45: Coached Cravings

Cravings.

They are ever very common, especially now as we are in the holiday season.  It is a VERY emotional period for us all.  Some of us deal with it easier, while others have a harder time resisting wanting to quiet the emotions with food; a learned behaviour.

Cravings going to occur; so, the rule of thumb about eating (or anything else of impulse): If the impulse comes from a joyous thought that feels good, follow it. If the impulse comes from an uncomfortable thought that felt bad, don't follow it (Abraham)  Most cravings do NOT come from a joyous place...  How realy simple IS that to find out, how much of a relief to feel that. It is NOt easy to accept and act this way;,however, that is what we are here for to conquer the days, and weeks, and months ahead. To a point, where this becomes a normal part of our days, a way of life. To create a life that honours living form THAT JOYOUS place.  Giving into the cravings of the spirit only, not the cravings of any painful source.

52 weeks of bodily bliss, week 43: Grandma + chicken breast

I lost my grandma last weekend, an in credible journey with one of the strongest women I have ever known in my life. Our mission in the physical form had a unique road to the ‘end’ yet remarkable. Amazing how a few strokes of a person’s brush over another’s character forever marks their destiny. She was THAT for me.

When we think of healthy eating, and of the top choices in lean protein, first vote usually goes for chicken breast.  Organic of course.  100 g has about 27 g protein for those interested, with very negligible fat content.

Today, I eat less and less meat; something about my being desires more ‘easy’ and ‘alive’ food for my digestive system.  Still, as athlete and former mega-meat-eater, I had chicken breast on the top of my list, as the meat of my choice.

Many would think that this is because of what I do, and that I ‘represent’ what I preach. The truth is that I lucked out.  My grandma had her own organic chicken farm behind the house, I spent a lot of my time growing up in.  One of the 'lucky ones' always ended up on the Sunday dinner table, when the family gathered.  Sunday dinner at grandmas was always of poultry.  As in many cultures, the dark meat, the juicier pieces found owners fastest, leaving the more dry and dense meat of the breast to the dogs and cats most times.

My grandma was always the one left with the mega meats of the whites.  She didn’t need more than little ‘ole me, to grab a hold of early enough to train well lol.  She would seat me on her lap and make me believe we were the coolest pair of cats eating nothing but white meat  :)  I still recall being so small, about 4-6 years old, chewing on a big piece of meat that felt too dry (even though was from the soup she had made earlier that day from scratch), that it took me many-many minutes to chew my first little teeth through.  I can still see her happy face encouraging me to like it.  I can still hear the happy sounds she made…and her cheeks I can still recall rounding upwards on each side with her smiling :)
It came to me the other day as I contemplated her, now that she is gone, that she actually got me started with liking white meat, or chicken breast; which became my ‘signature’ choice in the family.  Later also followed as a staple lean meat/protein source in my diet…helped me to many many wins too :)

Even thought my dietary choices today are a lot different, this I thought was a cute story to share. Love, Life, and Chicken Breast.

Rest in Peace Grandma :)

Love always…

52 weeks of bodily bliss, week 40: PoSt SugAR hIGH

Last night was the night of all dreads, when not only the scariest creatures appear everywhere form your grocery store, to your yoga class, not to mention your own house!!!  Must have been Halloween. Since our healthy eating habits are mainly still are limited to the everyday food picks, our tiny treats are still popularly of the sugar-kinds. I can safely predict that many indulged and over indulged of these tiny-devotins and will be feeling it big time today, and even the next few days.

To combat the effects of the sugar bombs, change up your norm a little:

  • start your day with a tall glass of crisp cold water to get the body's natural cleansing processes going
  • get out there, 20-30 minutes spent in the crisp morning air will do wonders for your metabolism and will sure to start your day on a high
  • Break a few minutes each hour, during the day to walk over to the fridge etc to refresh and down a glass of cold water; total of 12 glasses by the end of the day
  • make sure to have about 5-7 small meals, most of which consisting of lean proteins, greens, grains and fruits
You may feel little change by the next morning. However, if you persist, by Wednesday you should glow, and the weekend warrior in you should be fully energized and ready to take on the world.

While Halloween and other celebrations usually come with the sugary temptations, it is likely that we will regret the indulgence faster than we realize. Always opt for only a very small amount, or a smart and delicious alternative of my favourites, the berries or melons, drizzled with honey and roasted or raw almonds and raw chocolate on top, or go for organic chocolate mini treats... Learning to put quality over habitual quantity even into our celebrations will serve us well in the long run.

Have an amazing week launching into the crisp season of Fall.

Love,
Monika

52 weeks of bodily bliss, week 39: why STOP, when you can keep moving

I hope everyone is loving Fall and all.  I want to share a very personal story from yesterday, that will show, you just how far it is possible to go when all 'normal' signs stop you :)

The link if you are on FB:
http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=447807322972&id=607660367&ref=mf

If not here is a text version:

I was watching TV sick on my couch 2 weeks ago when I came across the trailer for the Marilyn Denis SHOW relay. I knew I HAD to be part of it.  Few things move me, but when they do, I am hard to stop.
I immediately decided that I was going to apply. Since I am not very ‘digitally editing savvy’ I knew it was Interview-in-Person for Monika.  I am very busy these days, hence I carefully managed my time and laid out the plan.  Resume updated, check. Dress the part, check. Car, ready to go, check.  Make a 7 am hair styling appointment, check.    I was READY. Still, anticipating a large crowd, I asked to push my hair appointment to 630, to be ON time, and fully ON.
Got up 5, had coffee, read my daily 30 minutes, washed my hair threw my hoodie on so all my stylist friend had to do is doll it up to sleek and professional perfection.  Game ON baby!!!!!
The intersection I was to turn from did not change lights for three rounds of light change. Plan B: detour.  Green lights all the way.  Last intersection before I was to turn. Red light. STOP. Green light, turn….just for an SUV to come out of nowhere and for me to have enough split-of-a-second reacting time to step on the gas try to move out of his way.  The SUV smashed into me.  I felt an enormous hit, a huge BANG!!!!!  I was spinning.  My car did two 360 turns. Then stopped without further impact:
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=555553&id=607660367&ref=mf
I had no idea what happened, I felt still.  A few minutes later my senses returned, I started looking around, saw stuff hanging in the car (air bags), glass everywhere…..I tried to open the windows I did not realize they were all broken and in pieces everywhere…  Then as I looked back I saw the SUV in the middle of the intersection.   Nobody moved.  Still a few minutes later I worried the other men in the SUV may have gotten hurt hence I got out ran up. Asked if they were OK, they laughed and said they were.  I tried to call for help, but could not reach anyone at 630 am.  The police came in seconds and my car was also hooked up to a tow truck and the driver asked me to get to safety in his truck. I was still in shock….  We were transported to  a parking lot where I started to come back to reality.  I got out back into the tow truck, the other men didn’t as much as asked if I was OK btw….  They were having fun. The officer returned my papers, and instructed as to what to do.   The tow truck driver, Rahul was very cool. He comforted and calmed me down, offered to help me with taking my totaled car to a pound and to drive me home until help came to me.
My mom was ready to hop into her car and drive from ERIN Ontario straight to me, just outside of Toronto.
I came home, called my hair dresser, told her what happened, and that I was STILL WANTING TO GET TO MY INTERVIEW!!!!!!  Luckily she said to call her as soon as my mom  got there and we were holding momentum up.  I started making calls to insurance, dealership, rental, police, everyone else you can imagine to get the details taken care of. Still  with the only thing on my mind, knowing  I WAS SAFE, and not hurt, that my dream to be at the interview would still happen.  By about 2 pm, I was ready to get to the car rental place.  The guys, at ENTERPRISE in Etobicoke were phenomenal and fast.  Mom and me transported into the rental car.  And were soon on our ways.  All while I had many amazing friends calling and messaging offering comfort and anything I may have needed to be helped out. Thank you all SO much for being by my side :)
My mom was very sick, the poor lady contracted the same stomach virus  I had last weekend, but stayed at my back and held the strength in me throughout this unbelievable day, that I would not ‘lose it’  I DID snap a few times, and I apologize for that!!!! But I kept on breathing deep Ujjayi breaths, all while telling my mom what that is, and told her about all the wonderful things I have been receiving and learning as a result of my yoga practice :)   YES, I am a real geek!!!!!!
We arrived downtown 3:40 pm, the line up for the interview wrapped around the CTV building….I drove a few circles while we arranged for a game plan.   Then came bad news: The line was cut-off.
All dolled up, and cut-ff.  Now what? Downtown, traffic madness, and we needed a new plan, I was NOT going to give up still.  I knew my project was NOT yet done!!!!!
I suggested we raced to the car pound, and filmed a short bio by the wreck of what used to be my vehicle.  GO!!!!!
We arrived to the pound.
I quickly taught my mom how to use my iPhone for video (poor lady just learned PC basics so she had a BIG job at hand).  She got the footage for me.  We left the car pound... and returned to continue to wrap up the last details of the day, recovered her car from the rental place etc.  In case wondering why we didn’t just take her car. Well, my mom lives on a farm. Her van is full of animal feed and so much of that sort of living. I am sure by the time we would have arrived downtown we would have looked like we had been chased down by chickens etc. I know that is a funny visual.
By this time my mom was so sick, she could not even talk.  I was so grateful, for her to do all this for me... Since she is not well oriented geographically, I followed her back to the main country roads, where she knew her way home from.  Then I also returned to the safety of my home, dead tired and overwhelmed.
As the day went on with so much going on I started remembering details for the event and wondered how and why those men that hit my car never even attempted to slow down, or even to pass me.  This we shall never know, but for sure, this day was full of miracles.
I wanted to create this write up to share and ask for YOUR support on this amazing mission at hand, and hopefully make it.
This story is my proof, and hopefully a chance to inspire someone else, like I used to be, who may be too scared to set out on a mission, or who may stops when the going gets rough. There is ALWAYS a way to complete our part of any task in life.
The rest, as it is often said, is out of our hands.
With love and gratitude to all you friends, fans, thank you!
Best regards,

52 weeks of bodily bliss, week 36: To the Power of P

This week I want to remind everyone of the power of the life forming protein. Many of us eat too little. Others tae in too much. In truth, and as a result of my experience lately, we do not really need to supplement too much. If one is in tune with their bodies they will be able to stabilize the amount their bodies need, and can metabolize, versus taking it too much that ends up only as waste.

Don't get too tangled up in the details, just use common sense and ensure that every meal you take in will contain healthy fats and a little protein. Your body's primary energy source IS carbs, the good ones, like grains fruits and veggies.  Fats are great from nuts as well, with the added protein content. Without overcooking them, get as much as you can in their natural state, fresh and raw.

I recommend Ani Phyo's book as a starter to many amazing ideas that will energize and help build your body to new levels of life:

Keep it simple and colourful, add a little protein to each meal and enjoy life and being alive.
Life, like eating, should NOT be complicated, nor unnatural.

Monika

52 weeks of bodily bliss, week 35: K I N D

September it is. Life will speed up with a new beginning for many. Kids go back to school, work gets a little more serious, the weather will be a little harder on us etc.  Therefore it is likely that the energies may press us against the wall a little more.  What happens a lot when the pressures increase is that, many of us get more stressed, anxious, impatient, and end up 'taking it out' on our immediate environment.  A mean word, a miscalculated outburst of frustration and the likes, can truly damage more than it was worth letting it out for...

At the start of your day focus on kindness for a few seconds and say thank you for your ability to meet life each day, in kindness.

Stay aware and conscious, even more than you have been...  Observe yourself the minute you feel, and we always do, stress increasing and patience decreasing. When you KNOW the easiest would be to let your short temper loose on the wrong person, bite your lip, take an extra breath and proceed after a big exhale to communicate what you may, with KINDNESS.

You may think this is too small to pay big attention to. However, I would recommend not waiting until an unkind gesture is uttered, that you will wish for the rest of your life, you'd taken a big breath prior :)

In kindess...
Monika

52 weeks of bodily bliss, week 34: Dance ... a gentle reminder

Dance with life: become a joy magnet.Invite your friends to come over and dance for joy. Ask each one to bring a few favorite songs that make them remember being in love or just being incredibly happy. The important thing is to enjoy your body and allow the music to free your spirit. Allow yourself to break loose and rejoice in the rhythms of life. Give yourself permission to fall in love with yourself. When you are in love, everything looks like Technicolor. Let your whole body tingle. - by Barbara Biziou

52 weeks of bodily bliss, week 33: Please, step ahead

September is knocking on the door.  Kids go back to school.  Grown-ups get back to their lives full-time, the focus in general shifts back onto responsibilities, and away from precious selves.  Does this mean, we must forget about health, fitness, well-being, and move all of our attention onto 'everything but?'

Not a chance!!! How? By planing ahead and making better choices. Some of my suggestions are:
  • Make meals ahead of time, so you always have something GOOD to reach for
  • Hire a personal trainer and get working out BEFORE the insanity of your day begins
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Prep your gym bag the night before, for workout the next day
  • Get to know your environment, so you KNOW where you can go to grab a healthy breakfast, snack, or lunch
  • Get creative within your environment, and never allow for anything that would make you compromise on giving yourself THE BEST
Still too confused?  Well, call on me.  I offer personal training and one-on-one healthy lifestyle coaching, in-person, or online, to ensure you stay on top of your life, no ifs' but's or 'as soon as'.'

Working with me can be your opportunity to give you the best of you-by being able to call on me, when, and wherever you are, to help you LIVE on track, and never fall off. It is truly, really, only UP TO YOU!!!!!!

Please contact me via monkovacs@gmail.com to get started. Have an amazing week ahead, and start planning ahead for yourself.....

52 weeks of bodily bliss, week 32: Green with Envy

Summer is perfect for salads, as long as we keep the dressings healthy.  By eating more salads, not only do we pack in great nutrition, but also help the bikini body stay in check.

I hear many people complain about the lack of variety in terms of eating healthy. That is not at all the case. I would challenge you to try out new salad greens every time you shop. I do this as well, not only to ensure I get my greens, but also to try out new things, keep the ordinary interesting; as well as, increase the nutrients I give my body.

Greens and salads help the body build up defense against diabetes, protect against osteoporosis, heart diseass, cancer. Greens are also great sources of antioxidants, many precious vitamins and nutrients, as well as, potassium, folic acid, and a lot more.

I love to use baby spinach as a salad bed one day, then arugula, Chinese cabbage, simple romaine lettuce, and so on. The greater the variety the better the mix.

Load up on your greens, and get high on your health.

52 weeks of bodily bliss, week 31: Elegant Delicious Blue

Blueberries have a wide array of health benefits and I LOVE them. They are one of the most potent antioxidants, loaded with vitamin c, fiber, and I could go on.

During the summer heat-wave, we all enjoy a treat that cools the palate. A great alternative to frozen yoghurt, or ice cream, is a sweet serving of frozen blueberries. Yes, you heard me right.  Using your favorite ice cream bowl, isn't it all about the perfect bowl ? :)

It is a simple and gorgeous, cooling delicacy, a very simple dessert, or snack, I enjoy daily, and can have multiples of no problem.

Cool it down with a bowl :)

52 weeks of bodily bliss, week 30: its a G thing

I love water. I love ice cold filtered water. I make ice cubes out of filtered water too. Hence it is an intrigue to make water interesting and even more healthy than it is...

One of my newest finds to spice up water,is ginger. It definitely is a new obsession :) The G-Goodness goes even further than to spice up water.

Not only is ginger rich in potassium, magnesium, copper, manganese and vitamin B6. Ginger is also known to be a great GI remedy, a potent anti cancer and anti inflammatory aid, and a very powerful antioxidant.

A simple and delicious way to enjoy ginger: ginger tea. Buy fresh organic roots for this of course. After washing the roots, peel if preferred, slice them or cut them to large pieces. In a large pot of water bring to boil and allow for the tea to cool. Move the tea into a nice glass pitcher or other water container, place to the fridge over night. Enjoy in place of water, or as a replacement to lemonade on the hot summer days.

Cheers!

52 weeks of bodily bliss, week 29:

I want this week to make you take at least an afternoon off doing NOTHING. A day would be best. A day, dedicated to you and whatever you want to just *be*
This isn't the time to catch up on tying up lose ends. It is a guilt free indulgence.  A promise of a good thing to you. This is a great first step in so many ways for those who suffer from guilt conscience. Or for those who always find something to 'do' but forget how to 'be.'

Happy 'being' I LOVED mine today... I just be'ed ;)
I would LOVE to hear how you be'ed ?

52 weeks of bodily bliss, week 28: jUST wALK aWAY

A very simple tool to use to help gauge what goes into your body is through portion control. In North America, we have a very distorted idea of what a serving of starch, protein, not to mention fat would be. For example, when we hear a handful of almonds for snack, how big of a handful are we just talking about? Believe me, it is not a very big one ...

Eating is a numbers game:calories - beyond the taste and nutritional make up. Hence, it can be a varying learning curve, person to person, to get comfortable with it, and be able to use it 'for' us...not against.

My recommendation is to get a great book as a reference tool. Or, work with a professional over a few sessions of basic nutritional counseling, to build the proper foundation of nutrition, and build your castle of physical perfection, from there. For starters that anyone can adopt right now is getting used to walking away from our plates while there is still food on it. This way, it is a definite step towards scraping off excess calories, that would otherwise end up stored. And lets face it even the smartest SPANX designs cant hide the unwanted inches as well as not wearing them in the first place.
Walk away from your plate knowing you are doing that much more for you and celebrate your wellness all around.

52 weeks of bodily bliss, week 27: Mirror Mirror Mommy + Daddy you are ...

A little late with a profound message for the week. Mirroring and awareness.

We are all a mirror images of our inner realities. If you think you can hide any belief about yourself by putting on make-up, the newest clothing designs, killer shoes and the $100 hair cut, you are far mistaken. The world sees beyond your mask, so take it off...will you.

I want to send an important message today for everyone. That is, to work on being aware of their inner realities, and how those reflect in their way of making simple, every day lifestyle and health choices.  It may not be much for you, however, if you have children at home, no matter how old, they will look [UP]to you for their FIRST answers of life, and who they think themselves into being - for life.  You create their reality through those you call your reality.

A little girl/boy who sees their mom rejecting desserts to maintain their perfect figure, or the one who finds her happy in the same place. Or the dad who finds his high on life, or power, in the chardonnay glass will lay down the foundation for their children to build theirs on. This is a guarantee.

Be aware of your choices, and the very intimate and personal self-talk you engage in daily with yourself, knowing it is the mirror your children grow up seeing themselves reflecting in. They will become what they see in you, and they see and understand beyond any comprehension of the human realms, for they are so open and without filters.

This week, work on your awareness of yourself and what you are saying to your environment through your behavior and image.

by Geneen Roth.
I highly recommend it.

L o v e

Doing anything 99% right really means u r doing it 100% wrong - All precious things u lost out on for 1% was it worth it?

I contemplated this quote during my walk tonight.  Just how easy it is to miss the mark.  And just how completely different of outcome is produced by just a fraction of a difference...

I thought of love, in the same realms.  When people have the real thing and still will allow for that to not be.  Love, let to slip through fingers, cracks, miss-fit.

Love only fits into love. Nothing else. No force, no rush, no fear, no lack. Only love.  True love however, has many faces. And those who are not prepared to meet love's many faces are in for some serious tests and surprises.

Love dresses in many [strange] outfits, a real LadyGaga. Love needs freedom, room made for her true becoming, being allowed to mould as she may, dance fly, come down a little, than go back again way up high. Then dance a little more, swirl around, get a little crazy, mixed up, psychotic, rampageous, and even violent in her becoming.  Just for her to fall back down into her lovers lap, light, soft, just adorable, hot, out of control, then just calm, silent, simple again.

So many rush loves perfect steps, rushing into loves territories they are not equipped to enter. They get frightened or scared away, because of some physical urge, an unresolved insecurity, an outside force, or, the so-called ‘needs.’  Every one of these distractions do one thing: carve love’s heart into something completely different, other than love--the very opposite of love.

Love only needs one thing: love. That is it once relaxed into it, only one way to go straight to the heart, from the center of one being to the center of another.

52 weeks of bodily bliss, week 26: quicky on salads

Most people believe that ALL salads are healthy meals.
NOT so fast !!!!

Use caution when choosing your salad.  Adding croutons, cheese, eggs, nuts, fried meat and high calorie/creamy/oily dressing will transform a salad from a healthy meal, to a high fat, high calorie, unhealthy, FAST-FOOD-like, meal.

Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back-- Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth that ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now."

The best Book on planet: Enchanted Love: The Mystical Power Of Intimate Relationships By Marianne Williamson

A favorite book of mine is ENCHANTED LOVE by Marianne Williamson, one of the most revolutionary thinkers of our time.  I have read this book in December 2009, and now it found me again.  A splendid touch, a must read, for anyone who believes in the power of the deepest most intimate love.  Anyone who found the courage to remove the armor that holds their heart and freedom sheltered from the world of possibilities will not be able to put this book down. Thank you Marianne for your gift of shining in your glory, through what, you make ways for so many of us in this world to step into ours.

"enchanted partnership begins with the conscious understanding, on the part of two people, that the purpose of their relationship is not so much material as spiritual, and the internal skills demanded by it are prodigious." High romance, she says, "is not about past or future. It is not about practicality. It is not about society or worldly routines. It is an audacious ride to the center of what is, at the heart of every person. It is a bold and masterful inquiry into what two people really are and how we might become, while still on earth, the angels who reside within us."
