Thank You

Thanksgiving: An American Celebration of the Creation of Wealth

by Gary Hull  (November 21, 2006)

Thanksgiving celebrates man's ability to produce. The cornucopia filled with exotic flowers and delicious fruits, the savory turkey with aromatic trimmings, the mouth-watering pies, the colorful decorations -- it's all a testament to the creation of wealth.

Thanksgiving is a uniquely American holiday, because this country was the first to create and to value material abundance. It is America that has been the beacon for anyone wanting to escape from poverty and misery. It is America that generated the unprecedented flood of goods that washed away centuries of privation. It is America, by establishing the precondition of production -- political freedom -- that was able to unleash the dynamic, productive energy of its citizens.

This should be a source of pride to every self-supporting individual. It is what Thanksgiving is designed to commemorate. But there are those, motivated by hatred for human comfort and happiness, who want to make Thanksgiving into a day of national guilt. We should be ashamed, they say, for consuming a disproportionate share of the world's food supply. Our affluence, they say, constitutes a depletion of the "planet's resources." The building of dams, the use of fossil fuels, the driving of sports utility vehicles -- they insist -- are cause, not for celebration, but for atonement. What if, they all wail, the rest of the world consumed the way Americans do?
If only that were to happen -- we would have an Atlantis. For it would mean that the production of wealth would have multiplied. Man can consume only what he first produces. All production is an act of creation. It is the creation of wealth where nothing before existed -- nothing useful to man. America transformed a once-desolate wilderness into farms, supermarkets and air-conditioned houses, not by taking those goods away from some have-nots, nor by "consuming" the "world's resources" -- but by reshaping valueless elements of nature into a form beneficial to human beings.

Since human survival is not automatic, man's life depends on successful production. From food and clothing to science and art, every act of production requires thought. And the greater the creation, the greater is the required thinking.

This virtue of productiveness is what Thanksgiving is supposed to recognize. Sadly, this is a virtue rejected not only by the attackers of this holiday, but by its alleged defenders as well.
Many Americans make Thanksgiving into a religious festival. They agree with Lincoln, who, upon declaring Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863, said that "we have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven." They ascribe our material abundance to God's efforts, not man's.
That view is a slap in the face of any person who has worked an honest day in his life. The appropriate values for this holiday are not faith and charity, but thought and production. The proper thanks for one's wealth goes not to some mystical deity but to oneself, if one has earned that wealth.

The liberal tells us that the food on our Thanksgiving plate is the result of mindless, meaningless labor. The conservative tells us that it is the result of supernatural grace. Neither believes that it represents an individual's achievement.

But wealth is not generated by sheer muscle; India, for example, has far more manual laborers than does the United States. Nor is it generated by praying for God's blessing; Iran, for example, is far more religious. If the liberal and conservative views of wealth are correct, why aren't those countries awash in riches?

Wealth is the result of individual thought and effort. And each individual is morally entitled to keep, and enjoy, the consequences of such thought and effort. He should not feel guilty for his own success, or for the failures of others.

There is a spiritual need fed by the elaborate meal, fine china and crystal, and the presence of cherished guests. It is the self-esteem that a productive person feels at the realization that his thinking and energy have made consumption possible.

Come Thanksgiving Day, when some success-hating commentator condemns America for being the world's leading consumer, tell him that he is evading the underlying fact: that this country is the world's leading producer. And then, as you sit down to dinner, celebrate the spiritual significance of the holiday by raising a toast to the virtue of your own productive ability and to America's productive giants, past and present.

Female body

"Millions of years of evolution have not created
a female body that is a mistake!
The menstrual cycle is responsible for
all human life on earth.
All the processes and organs
of the female body are imbued
with innate wisdom that is
part of our inner guidance system."

What I was totally sure I would never ever do ...

(Jodi this is for you)

I hope everyone is enjoying the amazing sunshine and still 9 celsius out in the positive. I love the sun!!!!

I thought today's blog would be something I was convinced was never going to happen: a recipe

I am known to be most diverse, and feel at home in almost all settings. Unfortunately the kitchen is not one of them. However, I LOVE food and I am very particular as to what I eat, the tastes, the ingredients, the quality, the overall experience.  These factors do limit me some, and have forced me to get creative in my own kitchen. No, have not burned it down yet...but yes if anyone wonders what to get me for Christmas, a few new sets of kitchen appliances are sure winners.

What also have made me a wizard of kitchen creations is having been an athlete and competitor for years, I never settled for the idea of boiled chicken breast and the no-dressing salad greens.  I AM NOT A BUNNY!!!!!!  THAT is not a way to living, only to cause metabolic damage in the long run - let's leave that to another blog.

Over these years, I always wanted to, and ensured to, eat in a fashion that would give me the nutritional value my body required and was still delicious.  Did I mention how much I love tastes, richness and real aromas of delicious foods.  Last, I do not support eating powders and bars. I love food. I want to eat food. Our bodies are built to on strive food. Good food.

These factors have sent me wondering in the kitchen with my non-existent apron and let Chef Monika begin...

Here is firsts: an easy, quick, healthy, delicious and nutritious lunch:

ASIAN CRUNCH SALAD:

2 cups mixed greens (I used sliced baby carrots, ice berg and romaine lettuce, shaved purple and white cabbages)
1-2 tsp roasted almond slivers
2 tsp Renée's Gourmet Japanese Ginger Vinaigrette
6 organic fresh egg-whites
Fresh ground black pepper and salt to taste

Toss the greens in a salad bowl, and set aside.

Heat a frying pan over medium heat, quickly roast the almond slivers - this brings out the taste. Just as the edges darken, remove from heat.

Egg whites: hard boil eggs the night before, so they cool and firm by mid day. They are also a lot easier to peel when left in the fridge over night. Separate the egg whites and slice them (discard yolk). Place over the mixed greens. Top with almonds, add salt and pepper.

*Can substitute egg whites for any lean protein of your choice, i.e. grilled chicken breast, or grilled shrimp etc
*For more variety and nutritional goodness, throw 1-2 tsp pineapple dices on top as well

Quick, easy, delicious, nutritious, and different.

Bon appetite.

Until next time....

Monika

Strong emotions...wisdom in your body

According to Dr. Christiane Northrup, the most acknowledged gynecologist and women's health specialist in the world, "A woman's monthly hormonal cycle is imbued with wisdom."

When a women suddenly feels emotional, or  teary, Dr. Northrup suggests to pause and consider what may have moved her.  When a woman feels  strong emotions, like anger, approaching, it is wise to remember that being able to repress emotions is not a gift.  Emotions, like anger, unacknowledged and unexpressed, IS what produces disease.  Strong emotions, like anger, are also sources of energy, all designed designed to help a woman identify what she may be facing and wanting in her life.  Strong emotions can mobilize a woman with the energy to say "yes" to herself and "no" to what no longer serves her.

Women's (and men's as well) bodies are designed to work with us and for us.  Our society with all it's supplementary offerings, and otherwise, is largely  designed to suppress and alter how mother nature wanted us to shine.  Be smart, check ahead, make sure you know what you are getting yourself into. Do not take a supplement that promises you something you could not achieve, or your body would not be abel to perform or become on it's own, naturally.  For, with some hard work, dedication and the guidance of a professional everything is possible, taken the right approach

Until next time....

Fintess Success

I was one of those people who struggled with the endless methods, fads, and diets. I bought every magazine, tried every fat burner, ate every bar that promised to be better than real food. Where did that get me? As far from my desired goal as possible.  I didn't get it, so I tried harder, more desperate... Until I found the key. The key to sanity, the key to wellness, the key to health. The key to life.

That is to do things right. I found the right information that allowed me to live my life in a shape, health and body I like and am happy with.

How can you also have the same?  Proper approach. Find a coach/trainer who fits you, who can help you work with you at your level.  It is not the coach's job to change you - it is your job to take responsibility for your life and that places you have been, based on where you are today.  THEN can you only start here and now, with the help of a professional to start on a proper plan.

Do not be fooled a 12 week program is not going to change your life. It will jump start you, and perhaps get you to your desired weight. Then what?  Exactly. Education, proper information, trust, and dedication to your goal IS what you need.  It starts and ends with you. If you fail, it is you, if you win...you guessed, it is all you.

Until next time ...

Water and prevention????

Our body is made up of approximately 70% water. When our bodies do not move, the water in them becomes stagnant, creating a breeding ground for disease.

As you move your body with exercise, you stir the water, refreshing your body, renewing your energy and regaining strength.

Proper nutrition and exercise are as much a part of a healthy life as well. Do not neglect yrouself. It all starts and ends with you.

My Mom [happy birthday]

Just how does she do it? This woman amazes me every time. She is like a rock, unbeatable, withstands everything every challenge, adversity, heartache, hard time – everything.

She always knows what to do, what to say; when to step in and put a stop on stupid moves I am about to make in my life, or when to silently let me go through lessons that HAVE to be learned.

Every time I feel like she cannot handle my seemingly childish dilemmas life poses, or I should be ashamed of my premises, she puts her motherly care in the driver's seat, and shows me the way, and gives me my strength back. When I get my heart broken, she will listen to me every night for hours if necessary, to let e understand my experience. And then eventually she puts the timer on and reminds me of my worth, and that which needs not be wasted any longer.

She reassures.
She reminds.
She shows me the way; every time.
She is my winning lottery ticket.
She is larger than life.
She is my life.
She gave me my life.

She is My Mom.

She has no Achilles heel. Or at least she makes it seem like there is no point to break her; except when she sees me broken. Then, like a being that is so much more than human – the greatest creation in existence – she appears.  She is like a Goddess that is stronger than Life itself, who, with the greatest tenderness and strength, once again, shows me the way, gives me my strength back. So that once again, I can set out to conquer my next mission and bring home the gold. It never fails.

Just last night I learned that there is nothing before her that I cannot bare; there is nothing before her that I have to be ashamed of. She gives me strength by being strong with me and for me. She reminded me of how much, since I was a little girl, every step of my life, I inspired her, reassured, and showed her, that she has been *right* all along to encourage, allow for, and push me through my experiences.

It is important to stop, not just pause, and let people know around us what they mean to us; especially when it is of our mom. I can't imagine life without her; I don't know how it would be to have to live without her. Someone who loves me to death, and every day I realize that I may never be able to show her how much she means to me.

We come across thousands of people, friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, acquaintances in life. Some remain in our lives, others, merely pass us by. The one person we can be certain will never leave us, is our mom.

I can only wish that one day I would grow to become half as much of a woman, and mother, as she is.

My Inspiration.
My Rock.
My Mom.

I am SOOOO lucky to have you. I love you...
